“Light Matters”, 2018
Intertwined, Interwoven, Interspersed. Disruption, Dispersion, Despair. Empathy, Anticipation. All are themes of Holly Sanford’s works for this exhibition.
Her themes however belie the seemingly joyous colours and patterns of the five glass panels and the seductive elegance and softness of the hanging silk . But one is not to be fooled.
The movement of peoples from their homelands to find safety and new lives in other parts of the world is a major part of today's reality. They may bring with them chaos for the besieged nations, but also their own creativity and culture, interweaving them finally and often nostalgically into a new home. They carry on their backs what they can, carpets, fabric, parts of their history, which they can lay as new foundations. They comfort each other when and where they have the energy. Sanford’s works in this exhibition are drawn from K. Masraawi and other brave men and women who often risk their lives to show us the plight of the diasporas - the largest movement in the history of mankind.
Light matters: the hope for a brighter future.
This exhibition was hosted by Sachiko Yamamoto, one of the members of The Women’s International Glass Workshop.

Works created for the exhibition "Private Collections", University of Iceland, Reykjavik, Iceland. All pieces A4 size or less.
May 2011 to May 2012.
This exhibition, "Private Collections", was a group show of professional international glass artists who have been associates for 28 years. It was organized by Sigridur(Systa) Asgeirdottir, the Icelandic member of the group and completes a circle started back in 1988 when many of us were invited to a group show in Bremen, Germany called "36 Women from 12 Countries". Since then, a core of between 9 and 19 have met every two years in each other's countries to exhibit our glass, share our knowledge and explore a new country, guided by our host of that meeting. Over the years we have become friends as well as colleagues.
Initially, after Bremen, it was Iceland, then Wales in 1991, Austria 1993, Japan 1995, Ireland 1997, USA 1999/2000, New Zealand 2002, Canada 2004, Australia 2006, France/Germany 2008, and now again, Iceland 2010/2011 (delayed by volcanic ash in 2010). The show in Reykjavik will run for a year, from May 2011 to May 2012.
This exhibition varied from the norm. Instead of each artist contributing one work brought carefully in a suitcase or sent expensively by freight, this time Systa asked us all to make 20 small personal pieces. Every window contained one of each person's work, making up a collection of all the artists in each window. There were 20 windows. At the end of the show, each artist received back 19 pieces, one piece of each artist's work, to create a private collection for each of us.
A mixture of panels, one from each of 20 artists, produces a "collection" in each window of the exhibition hall.
